Alison Redford notifies Speaker of absence, avoids salary deduction

Alison Redford remains the MLA for Calgary-Elbow.

Former premier Alison Redford has informed the Speaker of the Albertalegislature that she will be absent.

The Speaker's office will not say why or for how long Redford will be away.

Redford stepped down as premier last month over controversy involving her travel expenses but remains the MLA for Calgary-Elbow.

She has not appeared in the legislature since.

As of Apr. 23, Redford was absent nine sitting days since her resignation.

She has, however, made occasional posts to her Twitter account.

On Apr. 10, she also handed out a government cheque in Calgary.

MLA attendance is tallied at the end of the session. If an MLA fails to notify the Speaker of an absence of more than ten days, $100 a day is deducted from his or her salary.

The Speaker's office would not say if Redford intends to show up at all for the rest of the session.
