Inmate found dead in Edmonton Remand Centre

An inmate was found dead in his cell at the Edmonton Remand Centre on Friday.

Police and emergency medical staff were called in around noon, a spokeswoman with Alberta's Justice Department said.

The man was alone in his cell, and Edmonton police are investigating the circumstances, she said.

A fatality inquiry will be held because the man died in jail.

The Edmonton Remand Centre is a 734-bed facility that holds both male and female inmates on remand.
