Leduc man in hospital after being tasered by RCMP

Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is in Leduc this morning after RCMP officers tasered a man late last night.

Leduc RCMP say they responded to a series of calls involving the 27-year-old man, who they say is linked to a series of assaults, automobile thefts, driving complaints and hit and runs, just before 10:00 p.m. MT Friday.

They say a fight broke out between police and the man when officers caught up with him at a gas station on the corner of 50th Street and 50th Avenueafter the man drove into a barricade and knocked down a sign.

Police then used a conducted energy weapon, or taser, on the man before handcuffing him.

Soon after, the man was found to be in medical distress and lost consciousness.

Emergency services personnel were called and transported the man to the Leduc Hospital. He was later transferred to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton.

He is now on life support and in critical condition, said ASIRT spokesperson Sarah Jackson.

Second ASIRT response this week

ASIRT is called in to investigate serious incidents involving police officers, including those that result in serious injuries or death.

"Our mandate is to investigate the actions of the police officers during the course of the males arrest and subsequently why he was taken into hospital," said Jackson.

"A taser was used but there is no correlation at this time that a taser is the reason why he is in hospital," she added.

This is the second incident being investigated by ASIRT this weekthe team is also looking into theshooting of a man, whocostars in the TV series'Mantracker,'by RCMP officersin Grande Cache on Thursday.
