Lubicon election ends dispute over chief

After three years of third-party management following a disputed election, a northern Alberta First Nation has elected a new chief.

A First Nation in northern Alberta has elected a new chief, ending a three-year dispute after the federal government refused to recognize the results of the bands last election.

The Lubicon First Nation, north of Peace River, has been under third-party management since January 2010.

The year before, two men claimed to be the winner of the electionincluding Bernard Ominayak, who was first elected as chief in the 1970s.

One hundred people cast ballots in the vote on Friday, about half of Lubicons eligible voters.

Billy Joe Laboucan is the new chief by acclamation.

The federal government received the the results Monday and says it is officially recognizing the results.
