Man, 50, killed in explosion at well site southeast of Grande Prairie

A 50-year-oldman is dead and another worker isinjured after an explosion late Tuesday at a well sitenearGrande Prairie.

Just before7:30 p.m., RCMP and emergency crews were called to the scene of the blast ataMojekResources site, about 63 kilometres southeast of Grande Prairie, near Musreau Lake.

One man died at the scene, RCMP said in a news release Wednesday.

A second worker, a man in his 60s,was transportedto hospital in Grande Prairie with non life-threatening injuries. A third worker on site was not injured.

The men were working in the area at the time of the incident, RCMP said. Investigators believethe explosion mayhave been triggered by a gasleak which has since been contained.

Occupational Health and Safety officials are investigating, OHS spokespersonGurshanDhillonsaid in an interview withCBCNewsWednesday.

Health and safety officials are on scene and the "site has been secured," Dhillon said. No stop work order is in place.

The Alberta Energy Regulator is working with the company, a spokesperson said.

MojekResources, based in Calgary, owns and operates gas and oil wells in Alberta.

A spokesman for the companysaid the death happened at the company's well site.

"We are currently dealing with the situation in Grande Prairie to ensure the safety of environment and persons," said Emmanuel Nwachukwu.

The company will comment further when more is known about what happened, he said.
