Occupy Edmonton protests continue into third day

The Occupy Edmonton protests continued Monday asparticipants held a noon rally and continued camping in a small downtown park.

The protests, which started in New York City last month, have spread across Canada.

About a thousand people took part in a rally in Edmonton's Churchill Square on Saturday. Several dozen people bearing signs that said "Debt is slavery" and "Can we end corporate terror?" protested outside Canada Place at noon Monday.

The movement seeks to point out inequity between the rich and poor. Law student and protester Mahad Mohamed pointed to an example he sees in Edmonton.

"The one per cent is getting way richer and perfect example is Daryl Katz trying to get the city to pay for his arena when he has billions which he could pay for himself," he said.

A number of protesters have set up camp in a small downtown park owned by Melcor Developments at the corner of 102nd Street and Jasper Ave.

Mohamed says he's willing to stay there for months if that what it takes to change the system.

Amber Crickmore, 21, is one of the homeless people who have joined the protests.

"Look around. All these homeless people here. Everybody here is for the same cause," she said. "Can't they see that we all need help? Yeah they have money. They have money to repave roads that don't need to be repaved, but they don't have the money to help us get off the streets?"

Melcor Developments have asked the protesters to move their camp out of the parkby 10 a.m. Tuesday.
