Olympic spirit reaches tiny, remote northern Alberta school

A tiny andisolated community in northern Alberta is out to prove the Olympic spirit has the power to reach around the world.

Fox Lake is an aboriginal community tuckedaway in the farthest reaches of our province, closer to Yellowknife, N.W.T., than Edmonton, withno cell phone service or year-round road access.

About 300 elementary students put together a YouTubevideo to support Canadianathletes.

Set to the theme song of the Vancouver Olympics,two teachers came up with the idea to give the kids a chance to feel connected to something outside their small community.

"We want to both support our athletes in Sochi and help teach our kids that they can have an effect on the world even if they live in such a isolated location," said teacherAron Strumecki.

"It can be easy to feel like you're not really part of the big picture and we really wanted to teach the kids that they can have greater impact beyond Fox Lake and the rest of the world thanks to the technology.

"That'sthe big lesson the big thing we wanted them to get from this experience."

The video also offers outsiders a peek atlife in the northern Alberta community in winter time.

Now Strumecki istrying to figure out a way to get a satellite signalinto the school so the kidscan actually watch some of the Olympics.
