Paintings of Edmonton alleys bring life to childhood memory

Kari Duke remembers growing up in Edmonton, when back alleys were like urban playgrounds.

While alleys are no longer the meeting places they once were, Duke still loves to paint them.

"It evokes a simpler time, a happier time, a safer time," the local artist said. "I think the back alleys are essential, and I think it is very sad if we start losing them."

The inspiration for Duke's exhibition at The Front Gallery comes from her childhood memories of playing in back alleys in the Parkview neighbourhood, where most days she would head outdoors after breakfast to play until dinner.

This is the opening weekend for her art exhibit, with more than a dozen works featuring the alleys from some of Edmonton's older areas. She uses oil on canvas to paint the scenes, some panoramic while others are portrait style.

"The old garages, the doors that never shut, and the fences that never stand straight," said Duke, referring to some of the elements she looks for to inspire her paintings.

The paintings will be on display until Dec. 3 at the gallery, located at123rd Street and 104th Avenue.
