A peahen that escaped from its Edmonton owner on the weekend was surrounded by animal control officers Monday afternoon and made a getaway to a neighbouring roof in north Edmonton.

"It's a bird, so it's able to get up to areas that we're not able to," said Sabrina Bergin, one of the officers called to the scene.

"And if we can't safely, can't approach it in a safe manner, I'm not willing to put myself at harm or any of the other officers that are going to be attending."

The tropical bird escaped from another home in theneighbourhood. The owner had been given a $500 ticket for having a prohibited animal in the city.

It arrived at Patrick Bong's home around 6 p.m. Sunday and started pecking at the window, he said.

"I fed her some food, thinking that she's going to stay there for the night," he said.

When he realized the bird belonged to someone, he called authorities who said his wasn't the first rooftop refuge for the animal.

"My understanding is that it's been at large for more than just since yesterday," said Bergin. "The original complainant said it had been on her roof for two days, and she was a little concerned about it."

The rescue effort was to continue Monday evening.

  • The bird referred to as a peacock in earlier versions of this story is, in fact, a peahen.
