Edmonton lawyer charged in hit-and-run death of teenage girl

A man charged with impaired driving causing death after a teenage girl was run down and killed in a marked crosswalk is an Edmonton lawyer, CBC News has learned.

A man charged with impaired driving causing death after a teenage girl was run down and killed in a marked crosswalk is an Edmonton lawyer,CBCNews has learned.

Chloe Wiwchar, 16, was killed while crossing Kingswayon Sunday night, her family confirmed Monday.

The girl was crossing in a marked crosswalk, with the lights activated, when she was hit at about 11 p.m. by a pickup truck on Kingswayat113thStreet, near the Alberta Aviation Museum, police said in a news release. She was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The truck fled the scene, police said. An off-duty officer stopped for the girl then followed thepickup truck, providing information to 911 dispatch. A man was arrested shortly after near 107th Avenue and 108thStreet.

Shane Stevenson, 47 a lawyer at DentonsLLP,has been charged with impaired driving causing death, having a blood-alcohol level over 80 mg causing deathand hit and run causing death.

"At this time, we can confirm that Shane Stevenson, a Dentons Canada partner in the Edmonton office, has been suspended from the firm pending further investigation," a spokesperson for the law firm said in an email statement."Given this is an active investigation, we are not able to comment any further."

"One of the brightest lights in my life has been taken from us," Wiwchar'smother, HollyLucier, said in a post on Facebook. "I am struggling with the words of this post as it is not something I ever thought I would have to write. I wanted to make sure that friends knew of her passing but just seeing these words, brings reality that much closer.

"May your heart rest easy my little Lilly. Forever my Lilly."

Wiwcharwas a student at Victoria School, according to her Facebook page.

An Edmonton Public Schools spokesperson said a team of social workers and psychologists was sent to Victoria School on Monday morning to provide support following the death of a female Grade 11 student.
