Pit bull attack on cat injures Edmonton woman

An Edmonton woman who was badly hurt when she tried to save her cat from a vicious pit bull is still recovering from the attack.

Last week Jennifer McLaren heard her cat Eddie squealing in distress.

"There was a pit bull just right here on my driveway," she told CBC News. "It had my cat's arm in its mouth. It looked like it was trying to eat it."

When she rushed in to help, the dog turned on her.

"And just kind of locked down on my thumb and the bone was completely broken in half."

McLaren was covered in blood and was rushed to hospital by ambulance. She had surgery this week and expects to miss six weeks of work.

The worst part was having to put down her cat.

"He was the sweetest cat in the world," she said. "He was my baby."

The dog owner told CBC News he believes the city will put down his dog.

"I apologize on behalf of the dog," said Terry Rock. "He never should have been let out. I think they're coming to get him. They're going to put him down, I think."

The city's animal control department has quarantined the dog and continues to investigate the attack.
