Rain leaves Parkallen street underwater

People living on a street in the south Edmonton neighbourhood of Parkallen woke up to find their vehicles parked in a canal.

Manyresidents living on 62nd Avenue at 111th Street also reported their basements were flooded as well.

Waterstarted seeping into Mark Freeman's house during Sunday's storm when 55 milllimetres of rain fell.

"It just kept coming and coming and coming," he said. "We managed to cordon off part of the basement."

Work on new sanitary relief sewers in the neighbourhood was completed this spring.

"It doesn't seem to be doing much at this point,"Freeman said.

By noon, about 10 homeownersreported flooding in their basements, saidChris Ward, the city's manager ofdrainage services.

The area was hit by about 25 millimetres of rain in a half hour. The city plans to review what happened because work recently completed in the neighbourhood wasn't enough to prevent flooding.

"We really need to take the time to have a complete understanding of what happened in the system, why it happened and then come up with further solutions that will help alleviate the situation," Ward said.

However, it could take weeks, possibly months, to analyze the data.

Parkallen was built on the former site of Lake McKernan which was drained in the 1940s to allow development to take place.
