RCMP recover rifle connected to Killam suspect

RCMP have located a rifle they believe belongs to the suspect in the shooting of two Mounties near Killam, Alta., in February.

After an anonymous tip, police searcheda remote rural location southeast of the central Alberta town Monday.

Policerecovereda Colt Law Enforcement Carbine 5.56-mm NATO semi-automatic riflealong with a partially-loaded 15-round magazine.

Police said the rifle is registered toSawyer Clarke Robison, who is charged with two counts of attempted murder and 15 weapons charges involving three handguns and three rifles.

Police are asking people in the area to keep a lookout forother suspicious items.

"Due to the fact that the accused was at large for two days in that area, there may be further evidence out there," said Sgt. Tim Taniguchi. "We want the public to remain vigilant to report any suspicious items in that area."

Robison, 27,will now facemorecharges, said police.

RCMP believe Robison had the weapon when he left the scene of the shooting of Constables Sheldon Shah and Sidney Gaudette on Feb. 7 at a rural propertynear Killam.

Shah and Gaudette were at the home of Robison's uncle, Brad Clarke, with two other officers to execute a search warrant for a .45-calibre handgun.

Clarke was found dead in the house the next day. Robison was arresteda few kilometres away three days later.

Robison appeared in Killam Provincial Court for a bail hearing Tuesday, with the judgereserving his decisionuntil Wednesday, April 11.

Shah and Gaudette are currently off duty andrecovering from their injuries.
