Social media rubberneckers nailed for distracted driving

RCMP are mailing out distracted driving tickets to an "alarming" number of people taking pictures of an accident scene on the QE II near Olds, Alta., last night.

RCMP are mailing out distracted driving tickets to an "alarming" number of people taking pictures of an accidentscene on theQEII nearOlds, Alta., last night.

Police were investigating a single-carrollover at the Highway 27 overpass ataround 6 p.m. whenthey noticed passing drivers pulling out cell phones and taking photos.

"They're not concentrating on the road," said Cpl. Al Nicholson. "They're looking at the collision scene trying to take a picture the person in front they stop to take a better picture and then you get a rear-end collision."

Nicholson said that increased the danger topolice and other emergency staff on scene.

Officers took down several license plate numbers at the scene and will be mailing out $172 tickets for distracted driving.

Firefighters also snapped photos of the offending drivers and will passthat information onto police, Nicholson said.

The driver of the car in the rolloverwas treated at hospital for minor injuriesand released.
