Somali-Canadian shooting victim identified

The man killed in a daylight shooting Sunday in Edmonton has been identified as 23-year-old Robleh Ali Mohamed, Edmonton police said Tuesday.

Mohamed died of a gunshot wound to the head. Police have not yet determined a motive for the killing.

Police responded to reports of gunshots in the area of 106th Avenue and 105th Street, where they found Mohamed's body in the driver's seat of a car parked in an alley.

"I know for a fact that we had a time lapse of about 25 minutes before the police ended up getting called," said Staff Sgt. Dan Collins of the homicide unit. "We have what we believe is a number of witnesses that were in and around the area that haven't come forward to the police."

Mohamed is the second man from the Somalian community to be shot dead in the last month.

On Nov. 12, the body of Abdulaziz Osman Isse, 21, was found behind a west Edmonton synagogue.

But police are not ready to draw any links between the shootings, Collins said, urging anyone with information to come forward.

"We need those individuals, whether they were of Somalian descent or any other witnesses to come forward and talk to us," Collins said.

The latest deaths also come just months after four young Somalian men died in a series of killings in late summer and fall of 2008. Community members are callingfor more programs to help keep their young people away from crime and violence.
