Townhouse fire in west Edmonton causes $600,000 damage

An overnightblaze that gutted a three-unit, two-storey condo complex under construction caused damageestimated at $600,000, fire investigators say.

No one had moved into thecomplex yet. The cause of thefire is still under investigation.

Firefighters were calledjust before 1 a.m. to the complex on 160thStreet, just north of Stony Plain Road, in the Britannia Youngstown neighbourhood.

When fire crews arrived, flames were shooting from the building's roof. The blaze was brought under control within the hour.

There was minor damage to adjacent occupied units in aneighbouring building, but no one was injured.

Fire investigators say it's too early to tell if the cause of the fire was suspicious.

This isn't the first time townhouses in the area have caught fire.

In Oct. 2014, an early morning fire destroyed three townhomes under construction at Stony Plain Road and 160th Street.
