Victim of crash was 31-year-old Edmonton woman

The woman who died Monday in a crash of a suspected stolen car in Edmonton has been identified as Colleen Joan Cappo, 31, of Edmonton.

Cappo was a passenger in the front seat of a 2008 Grand Prix that crashed into a tree at 55th Street and 118th Avenue around 9:30 Monday morning afterthe driversped away from police.

The 30-year-old driver of the car remains in hospital in critical but stable condition.The male passenger in the back seat of the car is listed in stable condition.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is currently reviewing the incidents that led up to the crashto determine whetherpolice did anything criminal in nature.

Edmonton police were alerted to the stolen car by the Onstar computer system at 9:31 a.m. and were able to locate the vehicle five minutes later, said Clifton Purvis, executive director of ASIRT.

When the car was found, officers in two police cruisers tried to box it off, but the Grand Prix was able to speed away.

The two police cruisers began a pursuit, but theofficer in the main police vehicle stopped when the speed of the Grand Prix went over 100 km/hr, Purvis said.

"That individual made the decision to terminate the pursuit without being instructed to do so by the police agency. That's what our information shows to date," he said.

Purvis did not say whathappened with the second police vehicle.

After swerving around one car on the road, the driver of the Grand Prix clipped another vehicle before spinning out of control and hitting the tree.

Edmonton police are continuing their investigation into the alleged theft of the Grand Prix and the actions of the driver.

"Two investigations are going on concurrently, and there is co-operation occurring between ASIRT and the Edmonton Police Service in our investigation," Purvis said.

ASIRT is an independent civilian agency that investigates all incidents involving Alberta police that result in death or serious injury.
