Police are searching for a dark-coloured SUV with significant front-end damage following a deadly hit and run in northeast Edmonton early Wednesday.

A 53-year-old womanwalked into the intersection of Fort Road and 131st Avenue in front ofCentury Casino on a red light at around 1 a.m., said acting Sgt. Darren Sunley.

The womanwas outside of the lines of the crosswalk when she wasstruck by a southbound SUV.

The SUV did not stop.

"Civilians initially came to her aid," Sunley said. "One of our members who happened to be travelling on Fort Road he happened to come across the collision almost directly after it happened he also attempted first-aid procedures."

However, when paramedics arrived, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to surveillance video from Century Casino, the woman left the casino, Sunley said.

It doesn't appear the driver of the SUV was coming from the casino.

Significant damage to SUV

The footagesuggests the SUV was travelling 50 to 60 km/h.

"There should be significant damage with the body going up over the grille and onto the hood," Sunley said.

Hesaid the driver-side headlight and possibly the windshield were shattered in the collision.

The video is of good quality, but there is "an issue in relation to the distance," he said.

Century Casino is on the east side of Fort Road, closer to the northbound lanes of Fort Road than the southbound lanes where the collision occurred.

The taillights of the SUV appear to be higher-set than the taillights of most SUVs, he said.

Police have identified the woman.

While policehave witnesses, they haveno suspects.

The woman's death is Edmonton's fifth traffic fatality of 2017.
