A "chemical incident" at a water treatment supplier in Burlington, Ont., left a worker with life-threatening injuries on Thursday, according to Ontario's Ministry of Labour and local emergency services.

Ryan Anderson, spokesperson for Halton police, said officers and other first responders arrived at Control Chem Canada on Harvester Road just before noon.

Control Chem Canadapresident Douglas Fasttold CBC Hamilton in an email the company is doing its own investigation alongside the ministry's investigation.

"From what we know at this point, one of our production batch makers was dispensing one material into a second larger container," Fast said.

"He was overcome by fumes and fell."

Tom Stirling, deputy chief of paramedic services in Halton, said the worker had "life-threatening injuries" and was taken to a local hospital.

Fast said the worker is still in the hospital.

Ministry of Labour spokesperson Anuradha Dhar said in an email the ministry was notified of the "chemical incident."

Dhar said a ministry inspector has been assigned to investigate.

"As the ministry's investigation is ongoing, we cannot provide further details at this time," Dhar added.

The ministry said no orders or requirements have been issued to Control Chem since at least last year.
