Police say a 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a rash ofthefts that saw 61 catalytic converters stolen over the past six months.

Investigators say they identified a suspect wanted for the majority of exhaust emission control device theftson October 10 and arrested him.

He's charged with mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with probation.

Police said most of the thefts, which appearedto target SUVs because they're easier to crawl under, happened overnight, but some were "brazen daytime thefts."

A converter can be removed in less than two minutes, according to police, who said vehicles at public parking lots at malls, schools and commercial areas were allhit.

The service isreminding people to ward off thefts by following these tips:

  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Park close to pedestrians or traffic so your vehicle isn't isolated.
  • Park in areas that have video surveillance whenever possible.

Police are asking any other victims to come forward and say additional criminal charges are expected.
