11-year-old boy in critical condition after being struck by Dodge RAM on Mountain

Hamiltonpolice say an 11-year-old boy is inhospital with life-threatening injuriesafter being struck by a Dodge RAM pick-up truck on Upper Gage Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

Const. Krista-LeeErnst told media the driver has been arrested and charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, but a release on Wednesdaymorning saysthe 28-year-old Hamilton man was arrested fordangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 3:20 p.m. following reports a child had been hit, said Dave Thompson, a superintendent with the service.

The collision took place nearRoyalvista Drive, a side street off Upper Gage between Stone Church and Rymal roads.

Ernst said the child was crossing the road from Royalvista Drive and the vehicle was driving southbound.

"The driver failed to stop for both the traffic light and the crossing guard and struck the child," a police release says.

"Police have ruled out driver impairment andall other contributing factors are being investigated at this time."

A glove covered in snow sat on the wet road a few feet behind a black pick-up truck and an ambulance.

The boy suffered "multiple traumas" consistent with being struck by a vehicle andresuscitative efforts were ongoing as he was transported to hospital, according to Thompson.

The child wasin "critical condition" and is "currently in hospital being treated by doctors," he added.

A crossing guard who saw the child get hit was too shaken to speak to media, sobbing as Ernst and other police officers tried to comfort her.

"As a mother I can only imagine what this family is going through and my heart goes out to them," Ernst said to the media.

The investigation is ongoing and police are appealing to anyone who may have more information to come forward.
