Half of Hamilton's COVID-19 cases considered resolved as total hits 401 Sunday

Hamilton Public Health reported a total of 401cases of COVID-19 Sunday, including a new outbreak at theBarrett Centre for Crisis Support.

Hamilton Public Health reported a total of 401cases of COVID-19 Sunday, including a new outbreak at theBarrett Centre for Crisis Support.

The outbreak was declared Saturday after a staff member at the centre, which providesmental health and substance use services, tested positive for the virus.

That brings thetotal number of outbreaks in Hamilton to 13, including nine at institutions and four in the community.

One of those institutions is the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre, wherean inmate tested positive for COVID-19 Friday.

Seventeen people in the city have died of the virus so far, while 201 50 per cent of the total cases are considered resolved.

Eight people were hospitalized at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and another 18 at Hamilton Health Sciences as of Saturday afternoon.

Halton

Haltonreported 19 more recoveries from the virus Sunday, bringing that total to 245.

The region currently lists484 cases (422 confirmed, 62 probable), up eight from the day before. Of those, 21 people have died.

The breakdown for Burlington shows 97 cases so far, including seven deaths and 48 recoveries.

Niagara

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Niagara region rose to 451 Sunday, a jump of 24 compared to Friday.

Seven more people have recovered, bringing the total so far to 168, while 246 cases are considered active.

Thirty-seven people in Niagara have died of the virus.

Haldimand-Norfolk

Thirty-two people have died of COVID-19 in Haldimand-Norfolk, the health unit says.

The counties reported 181 confirmed cases of the virus Sunday morning, the majority of which involvestaff or residents ofAnson Place Care Centre in Hagersville.

Thirty-five people have recovered from the virus so far.

Brant

Eighty-seven confirmed cases of COVID-19 were tallied in the Brant County Health Unit's coverage area Sunday.

Of those cases, 58 are resolved, five required hospitalization and three people have died.

The health unit has announced a second outbreak atSt. Joseph's Lifecare Centre in Brantford, with one staff member testing positive. The home had an earlier outbreak that ended April 12.
