Hamilton 'deserves better': 2K students block Dalewood Ave. for homecoming

Hamilton police issued dozens of tickets on Saturday, investigators say, after a massive swarm of students descended upon Dalewood Avenue South for an outdoor homecoming party.

Photos from the scene show students in McMaster colours blocking the street at every turn. Hamilton police say over 2,000 students attended.

"Police issued 30 provincial offence notices, ranging from liquor offences to public urination charges," police said in a news release.

"The Hamilton Police Service did not receive any reports of mischief or serious injuries."

In a statement posted on the university's website, Dean of Students Sean Van Koughnett said that the massive group of partygoers "occupied part of Dalewood Avenue."

"Some of those partygoers behaved regrettably, disrespecting our neighbours and our institution in the process," Van Koughnett said. "This is especially disheartening because of all the good our students do the thousands of students who volunteer their time and contribute to our community in a myriad of ways. In just a few hours, some of this goodwill was undone by behaviour that was immature and dangerous.

"Our neighbours, our university, and our city deserve better."

Police say that prior to homecoming, officersvisited any household that was publicly advertising its intent to host a party, and made sure "students understood the consequences if they went forward with an event."

"While Hamilton Police Service had assigned police officers to McMaster's Homecoming, the party attracted thousands of students," a police news release reads. "All available resources were sent to the area to maintain public order and ensure public safety."

Police say the McMaster Student Union President arranged for student volunteers to assist with the cleanup of the area.
