19-year-old man dead after daytime shooting in downtown Hamilton, police say

A 19-year-old Hamilton man is dead afterhe was shot downtownon Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

A 19-year-old Hamilton man is dead afterhe was shot downtownon Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

The man was shot nearKing Street West and MacNab Street South, Hamilton police said in a media release.

Police were called to the scene around 1 p.m.Dave Thompson, superintendent with theHamilton Paramedic Service, said paramedics also responded around that time and theman was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Several hours later, multiple police vehicles and officers were still at the scene,in front of the Ellen Fairclough Building, a ServiceOntario location, steps away fromtheFrank A. Cooke bus terminal and across fromJackson Square.

As of late afternoon, King Street remainedclosed to vehicles from James Street North to Summers Lane. Part of the sidewalk was also closed.

A single blue shoe, paramedic kits and22 evidence markers rested on the blood-stained sidewalk.

Police said suspects were seen fleeing the area but that there were "no suspect or vehicle descriptions.

"Investigators believe this to be a targeted shooting," police said.

Hamilton's mayor, Andrea Horwath, posted on X, saying she was "shocked" and "dismayed" to hear about the shooting.

"My thoughts are with all those who have been impacted," she wrote.
