Woman dragged off trail and assaulted in 'unprovoked' attack on Hamilton Mountain: police

A woman was dragged off a Hamilton Mountain trail and assaulted, in what police say was an "unprovoked" attack.

Suspect is a man aged between 18 and 24 years, police say

A woman was dragged off aHamilton Mountain trailand assaulted, in what police say was an "unprovoked" attack.

Hamilton police say the woman was walking near Upper Paradise and Donnici Drive around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday when she was approached by an unknown man and dragged off the trail.

According to police, the man assaulted the woman but was interrupted by witnesses walking nearby.

The man fled on foot southbound towardUpper Paradise, police say.

Police provided the following description of the suspect:

  • Black male.
  • Between 18 to 24 years old.
  • Roughly sixfeet tall.
  • Roughly175 pounds with a lean athletic build.
  • Black curly hair on top and short on the sides.
  • Wearing a navy blue t-shirt, black or navy baggy jogging pants.
  • Carrying a cross body bag.

Investigators are askingresidents in the area to review their video surveillance for any footage that may assist with theinvestigation.

Police offer safety tips about trails

Hamilton police say citizens should take extra precautions when using trails or walking paths within the city given the unprovoked nature of the attack.

Police say people should also consider the following safety tips:

  • Walk or run with a partner when possible.
  • Tell someone the route you are taking and the anticipated length of time you will be gone.
  • Avoid poorly lit paths or running or walking when it is dark.
  • Stick to populated paths when running or walking or cycling alone.
  • Carry a cell phone or personal alarm device.
  • Run or walk without headphones.
  • If confronted, be loud and shout for help.
