Hamilton woman renting fake apartment, police say

A hamilton woman posed as a property manager and fraudulently took cash for a fake apartment, police say.

A Hamilton woman has been arrested for renting out a fake apartment, police say.

On Nov. 1,a 20-year-old woman posed as a property manager for a building on Barton Street East and posted a fake ad indicating an apartment was for rent in the Hamilton area, police say. Two people tried to rent the apartment.

In one case,a 25-year-old man arranged to meet with the woman who placed the ad, while a 29-year-old woman separately made a financial agreement with the suspect.

The man met with the suspect and gave her a cash deposit for three months rent in advance of moving.

The man left and returned later in the evening, only to find he couldn't get inside with the keys she provided.

He eventually learned the apartment was not for rent and on Nov. 3, he called police.

Around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, the woman was arrested at her home.

A 20-year-old Hamilton woman was charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and released on a promise to appear.
