A Hamilton man was arrested early Saturday for crashing his car into a median, trying to abandon it and then resisting arrest when the police arrived.

Around 3:45 a.m. officers were called to the area of East 43rd Street and Fennell Avenue to investigate a single vehicle collision. After driving a car into the centre median, the occupants were trying to walk away from the crash, police say.

When officers arrived, the driver showed signs of impairment and resisted arrest, police say.

A struggle broke out, which led to the officer and the driver "going to the ground" and the officer hitting his head, police say.

The officer was taken to hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The man was arrested and taken to the police station for a breathalyzer test, where he blew twice the legal limit, police say.

A 19-year-old Hamilton man was released on a promise to appear in court. He facescharges of impaired driving and assaulting police.
