How Hamilton's Olympians fared in Rio

How did the Hamilton, Burlington and McMaster-connected athletes fare at this year's Summer Olympics?

Big accomplishments for women's soccer, and a retirement for a beloved kayaker

How did the Hamilton, Burlington and McMaster-connected athletes fare at this year's Summer Olympics? We've rounded up some results below.

Mark Oldershaw, canoeing

Mark Oldershaw, 33,a third-generation canoeist from Burlington was competing in his third Olympics. A bronze medal winner in London in 2012, henarrowly missedplacing in the canoeing (C-1) 1,000 final. He placed fourth in the men's canoe single consolation final.

Reid Coolsaet, marathon

Reid Coolsaet, a marathon runner competing in his second Olympics,placed 23rd in the men's marathon. He wrote a few thoughts about his result on Instagram:

Eleanor Harvey, fencing

Fencer Eleanor Harvey,In her first Olympics and just 21,missed out on a medal after losing her quarter-final. Inan earlier round, she eliminatedItaly's two-time world champion Arianna Errigo in a shock victory.

"Top eight is pretty good, but it sucks to lose by two points to go into the top four," she told CBC after the match. "It's my first Olympics, so it's OK. I'll be back, but it still sucks."

Melissa Tancredi, soccer

Melissa Tancredi grew up in Ancaster and played a big role in getting the women's soccer team as far as they got in the tournament with two goals in a big win over Germany.

The #10 ranked team going into the tournament won five of six games,ultimately winningthe bronze medal against Brazil. Tancredi,wasone of the veteranson a team that mixed experience with youth.

She is the only Hamilton area athlete to win a medal in Rio.

Kia Nurse and Shona Thorburn, basketball

Hamilton's Kia Nurse and ShonaThorburnand the women's basketball team were knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals for the second Olympics in a row.

Heather Bansley, beach volleyball

Waterdown's Heather Bansley and her beach volleyball partner Sarah Pavan were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Alena Sharp, golf

Alena Sharp had her best season in her 11-year professional golf career going into Rio. She went two-under in her final round to tie for 12th.

David Hearn, golf

David Hearn, another golfer with a connection to the Brantford Golf and Country Club, finished in 30th place at 1-under.

Michelle Fazzari, wrestling

Hamilton-born wrestler Michelle Fazzariwas defeated by Turkey's Elif Yesilirmak, and didn't wina spot inthe 58 kg quarter-finals.

Anthony Romaniw, track

Anthony Romaniw, a middle-distance runner, finished 27th in the 800 m and didn't advance.

Andrew Yorke, triathlon

Andrew Yorke, a triathlete from Guelph, was involved in a crash in the bicycle portion of the race, but got up and finished.

Adam vanKoeverden, kayaking

Kayaker Adam van Koeverden has four Olympic medals but didn't make the final in Rio. He announced he'd retire as an Olympic athlete, and reflected on his career for CBC Olympics.
