Hamilton police detectives are trying to figure out just who is the blood-soaked man who drove to a gas station on the Stoney Creek Mountain early this morning and how he sustained life-threatening injuries.

Right now it's a mystery, because investigators haven't been able to actually speak with the man.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s, arrived in a vehicle at the Pioneer Gas station at 333 Upper Centennial Parkway near Green Mountain Road just after 2:30 a.m.

In a news release, police said the man was seen to have "sustained serious life-threatening injuries."

"The man was observed to have a significant amount of blood on his clothing," the release reads.

The man managed to flag down a person in the area, who called 911. He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police say.

Detectives are investigating, but police say because of the man's injuries, they haven't been able to actually speak with him to figure out how he was hurt, or even who he is.

Hamilton police spokesperson Const. Steve Welton told CBC News that he could not say if the man had any ID on him, or if there was any identification in the car.

"Detectives are only confirming at this time that his identification has yet to be confirmed," he said. "They are in the process of gathering more information and hope to confirm who the man is through their investigation."

Welton also could not give any information about the condition of the vehicle, including if it was involved in some kind of collision. He also couldn't say if the man's injuries appeared to be from a beating, a shooting, or a stabbing.

"Police are not commenting on the specifics of the injuries in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation," he said in an email.
