Janco Steel worker killed by forklift, police investigating as a traffic fatality

Hamiltonpolice say the 36-year-old man who died after being hurt atJanco Steel Ltd. on Tuesday was hit by a forklift, a collision that's considered a traffic fatality.

The incident markstheninth time a pedestrian has been killed in acrash this year, according to investigators.

Police say first responders were called to the steel plant on Arvin Avenue in Stoney Creek at roughly10:30 a.m.

An industrial forklift in the plant struck the man, according to police.

Hamilton ParamedicService superintendent Dave Thompson told CBC Hamilton on Tuesday that theman had life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

He also said first responders tried toresuscitate the victim, but police say the man died of his injuries shortly after arriving atWest Lincoln Hospital.

Police say members of thedivision two criminal investigation branch and collision reconstruction unit are assisting the Ministry of Labour, whichis leadingthe workplace investigation.

Representatives for Janco Steel Ltd., which specializesin flat rolled steel products,did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.
