Larry Di Ianni not running in Hamilton mayoral race

Long-time politician and former Hamilton mayor Larry Di Ianni has announced his name will not be on the mayoral ballot for the upcoming municipal election.

Long-time politician and former Hamilton mayorLarry Di Iannihas announced hewon't be on the mayoral ballot for the upcoming municipal election.

Di Iannimade the announcement through social media Friday morning, ending speculation on whether he would enter the race for mayor.

After careful consideration and consultation with family and friends, I have decided not to run in the 2014 municipal election," he said.

Di Iannihad served as mayor of the city between 2003 and 2006, three years as a Stoney Creek councillor in the amalgamated cityand previously as a Stony Creek city councillor.

"As a proud Hamiltonian and a strong believer in what this city has to offer, I believe that I still have a lot to give in making this great city of ours even better," he said in a statement posted on Facebook, promising to continue playing an "active role" in the city.

Di Ianni listed as among hisaccomplishments initiating discussions and partnering with McMaster to construct the soon-to-open health facility downtown, construction of the Red Hill Parkway and constituting a working group to help restore the Lister block.

In 2006 he pleaded guilty six charges of election fundraising violations for illegally accepting money during his campaign for mayor.He has always maintained the lapse was an honest mistake.

Di Ianni, who currently runs a consulting firm, said he will continue volunteering with the anti-poverty charityHARRRP as well asthe Catholic Children's Aid.

"I look forward to working with the next civic administration in whatever capacity I can to move the city forward," he said.

Being an engaged citizen is important.Placing ones name on a ballot for election is the highest form of engagement. I salute all candidates for elected office and wish them well in their endeavours.

Ward 12 Coun.Lloyd Ferguson alsoannounced recently that he would also not be running for mayor. The race currently includes eight people: Michael Baldasaro,Ejaz Butt,Brad Clark, Fred Eisenberger,NickIamonico,CrystalLavigne, BrianMcHattie and Don Ross.
