Enbridge plans additional pipeline work in Hamilton

Enbridge is planning to replace or reroute more than 40 kilometres of pipeline in Hamilton.

CATCH, a volunteer community watchdog group in Hamilton, reports that the two pipelines- Line 10 and Line 11- originating at Enbridge's Westover hubare over 60 years old and require significant repair.

The pipelines carry oil to the company's Nanticoke Junction.

According to Enbridge, the "scope of the proposed projects includes replacement of a portion of Line 10 about 37 kilometres in length some of which will be replaced within the existing right-of-way, while the other segments will be constructed in a new right-of-way and connected to the existing pipeline."

Enbridge is planning on rerouting the pipelines around four golf courses, a Mount Hope subdivision and a wetland area, according to CATCH.

Critics of the plan, however, note that other sensitive environmental areas will be affected, including the Hayesland Swamp and Spencer Creek.

Enbridge hopes to file an application to the National Energy Board for its replacement and rerouting plans in September, with a public open house sometime in October.
