Man in hospital with broken jaw, SIU investigating

The provincial Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into an incident involving Hamilton police after a 19-year-old man was Tasered and ended up in hospital with a broken jaw.

According to an SIU news release, the officers were first called in about a man with a knife damaging a residence on Glennie Avenue, near Parkdale Avenue North and Barton Street East.

After the officers arrived, there was an "interaction" between the man and police, the SIU says.

Two officers fired their conductive energy weapons (better known by the brand name Taser) and the man was arrested.

"He was taken to hospital and is being treated for a broken jaw," the news release reads.

The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault involving a police officer.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the SIU at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529 Ext. 2038.
