Police investigating 2nd weekend shooting

Hours before a teen gunman opened fire inside a crowded Tim Hortons on Saturday, emergency crews were also called to another shooting incident downtown, police announced Monday afternoon.

Investigators don't believe there is connection to shooting incident inside Tim Hortons

Hours before a teen gunman opened fire inside a crowded Tim Hortons on Saturday, emergency crews were also called to another shooting incident downtown, police announced Monday afternoon.

Though the two bursts of violence happened just over 12 hours apart, police say they don't believe the two incidents are connected, and believe both were "targeted" shootings.

The first shooting happened around 4 a.m., when officers were called to the area of Queen Street North and York Boulevard for reports of gunfire.

Witnesses reported seeing several people running away from the area after the shots rang out.

Police arrived at the scene and attempted to question witnesses who were believed to have been involved, but they wouldn't cooperate or hand over much information, a news release reads.

"However based on the details shared, police believe the incident to be targeted in nature," a police statement says.

Shell casings were located at the scene as police searched the area for evidence. They also found a 25-year-old man who was attempting to hide from police. He was charged with possession of cocaine, but no one was arrested on firearms charges.

"We're taking this very seriously, but we're not getting much cooperation from these individuals," said Const. Steve Welton.

Welton couldn't say why police waited two days to release any information about the shooting, but said it was likely "reasons related to the investigative avenues [detectives] had to pursue."

This was the first of two shooting incidents in the city over the weekend. A teen was also arrested in connection with a shooting inside a Tim Hortons on Saturday afternoon.
