A man and woman trying to escape police drove a stolen red pickup truck, police say, onto some train tracks in Hamilton's industrial sector on Sunday and got stuck.

Ontario Provincial Police arrested the man, who was driving, and a woman passenger.

An OPP officer was on the Queen Elizabeth Way around 10:50 a.m. Sunday when an automatic licence plate reader in his cruiser registered a passing red pickup as having been stolen last year.

The officer followed the truck into the city of Hamilton.

"The vehicle ended up making all sorts of turns and ended up going down a rail line, getting stuck about 200 metres off the road," said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

"As soon as it hit the tracks, it was bouncing and bumping and just going all over the place they didn't get very far," he said.

The officer then saw the man and woman get out of the truck on foot, Schmidt said. Hamilton police and OPP arrested them.

They were charged with fleeing from police, mischief, possessing stolen property, possessing identification documents, possessing counterfeit currency and failing to follow bail conditions. The driver was charged with driving under suspension and dangerous driving.

Schmidt said the two are in custody pending a bail hearing.
