Police: suspicious packages found in mailboxes Friday not explosives

Hamilton Police closed of a stretch of Main Street from the Queenston Traffic Circle to Ottawa Street North on Friday after two suspicious packages were found.

No charges for person responsible for mailing packages

After two suspicious packages were discovered in Canada Post mailboxes Friday, Hamilton Police confirm that neither contained an explosive.

Hamilton police wereinvestigating after two suspicious packages were found inmailboxes on Main Street East Friday.

Officers closed off a stretch of Main Street from theQueenstonTraffic Circle to Ottawa Street North.

One package was found in the area of Main Street East and Cameron Avenue. During the investigation a second packaged was reported in the area of Main Street East and Huxley Avenue.

According to Hamilton Police, given the initial information and in the interest of public safety, the Explosive Detection Unit detonated both packages.

Officers wearing protective gear and masks wereat the scene.

Staff Sgt. ScottMoretoncould not say what the packages looked like.

The person responsible for mailing both packages has been identified.

"We've identified the person who put them there and there's no criminal charges pending," saidMoretonSunday.

Police say there continues to be no threat to public safety due to this incident.
