Stay out of the water: Toxic algae confirmed in Hamilton Harbour

Public Health officialshave confirmed toxic blue-green algae has infested parts of Hamilton harbour and are warning residents to stay out of the water.

Cyanobacteria, a distinct greenish sludge, has been spotted at the BayfrontPark Boar Launch, Pier 4 Park beach, Harbour West Marina and throughout the marinas on MacassaBay, according to a city press release.

Health effects of toxic algae

The algae can cause several health risks, especially if the water is swallowed.

Skin contact with contaminated water can cause irritation or itching, while exposure to the toxins can cause headaches, fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and rashes.

If someone who has touched or swallowed the water starts to suffer any of the possible health effects described above they're advised to contact their family doctor or head to a walk-in clinic.

Anyone who comes in contact with the water, even while launching a boat ortaking it out of the water with a trailer, should wash themselves off with clean water as soon as possible.

People are also reminded to keep their pets out of the water.
