Woman rescued from Albion Falls

It was the third rope rescue incident at Albion Falls so far this month.

Incident comes as petition for safety improvements launched by a man badly injured in 2016.

A woman was rescued from Albion Falls on Tuesday after she got stuck while exploring the waterfall.

The woman was not injured and the operation to rescue her went quickly, said Hamilton fire spokesman Claudio Mostacci. The fire department sent seven vehicles to the popular waterfall when the call came in just before 2:30 p.m.

Firefighters put her in a harness and rescued her from the top of the waterfall, Mostacci said.

He didn't have details to share on how she got to where she was along a wall of the waterfall, but said that she'd gotten to a point where she was "unable to go forward or back, she felt in danger, she called for help."

Third rope rescue at Albion Falls this month

Nearly two weeks ago, a man in his early 20s slipped from what friends said they thought was an "older path" and died at Albion Falls. Two other friends had to be rescued at the same time. Three weeks ago another woman was rescued from Albion Falls.

Last year, 2016, saw a spike in rope rescues at Hamilton's waterfalls. Emergency crews performed 25 rope rescues the largest number in at least seven years.

Six of those were at Albion Falls.

And Corey Dixon, 21, who was involved in a similar accident near the falls last year, and runs aFacebook groupcalling for officials to make AlbionFalls safer for visitors, has launched a petition to the same effect.

He says despite signage saying otherwise, there are no "marked trails" at the falls.

Dixon, who slipped on black ice at the foot of the staircase near Albion Falls andfell 12 metres last year, broke his back and other bones, shattered his arm, and had a concussion and a brain bleed.
