Hamilton steel maker ArcelorMittal Dofasco says worker died on the job

A worker at Hamiltonsteel maker ArcelorMittal Dofascohas died on the job, the company's vice president said.

"We are devastated and this is an incredibly difficult time. We have our colleague and their family, friends and co-workers in our thoughts and our focus right now is on supporting them first and foremost,"Lisa Marcuzzi, who manages corporate affairs, said in an emailed statement Saturday night.

The company did not confirm when the worker died, but the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development said they learned about the death on Sept. 20.

The death occurred at 1330 Burlington St. in Hamilton, ministry spokesperson William Young said.

In an email to CBC Hamilton, Young confirmed the person who died worked forArcelorMittal Dofasco, and said that a ministry inspector "attended the scene" and issued an order not to disturb it.

"As the investigation is ongoing, no further details are available at this time," Young said.

Marcuzzi said the company will "continue to cooperate with authorities."

CBC Hamilton asked the business if leaders could share anything more about the person who died, the circumstances of their death, and how the company is following up.

Spokesperson Marie Verdun declined to answer, saying, "We are devastated. There isn't anything more we are able to share."
