Kamloops city council has voted unanimously to support the concept of a supervised drug injection site in the city.

A delegation from Interior Health spoke at yesterday's council meeting pointing out that in the first six months of this year, 22 people died in Kamloops from drug overdoses.

Interior health is considering one, or maybe two safe consumption sites.

There are still many hurdles to clear, but council has agreed to support the idea in principle.

There is no immediate plan for a supervised drug site in Kamloops.

Interior Health says there is still much work to be done.

Meanwhile, the North Shore Business Improvement Association has released a survey showing that 76 per cent of north Kamloops businesses do not support a drug injection site in their part of the city.
