Fire at Cambridge addiction treatment centre causes significant damage

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating a fire at the site of a new addiction centre being built by House of Friendship in Cambridge. The site was scheduled to open this summer.

The Ontario Fire Marshal isinvestigating the cause of a fire at the House of Friendship addiction centre in Cambridge.

Crewswere called to a structure fire on Concession Road around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The new addiction treatment centre is currently being renovated. It wasscheduled to open this summer.

John Neufeld, executive director of the House of Friendship, said in an emailto CBC Kitchener-Waterloothat he was devastated.

"This is difficult news to wake up to, particularly during a time when addiction treatment is desperately needed for so many individuals and families in Waterloo region," Neufeld said.

"We are incredibly thankful for the amazing outpouring of support we have already received from supporters, community leaders and partners once they heard the news. And we are grateful for the quick response of first responders and that no one was injured."

On Tuesday, the administration and finance committee for the Region of Waterloo had approved a $150,000 grant for the new location.
