Carden Street reopens after overnight standoff in Guelph

Carden Street East is once again open between Wyndham St. North and Macdonell St. after a standoff between police and a 53-year-old man who barricaded himself in his apartment.

Officerswere called to the scene just before 4:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

According to a release, police tried to assist the man, but he stopped cooperating and barricaded himself inside.

Police negotiated with the man overnight until around 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, when a tactical unit took him into custody.

Carden Street East was closed betweenWyndham St. North and Macdonell Street throughout the police operation.

Guelph Transit buses were re-routed during the standoff and riders were using the Cooperators building on Macdonell at the mouth of CardenSt.as a temporary stop.

The standoff ended when the man was taken to Guelph General Hospital for an assessment.

Carden Street has since re-opened.
