Peddlar's Village at St. Jacob's Farmers' Market will not be open Saturday following fire

Damage to the Peddlar's Village building at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market is estimated at $150,000 after a fire Thursday afternoon. The Woolwich Fire Department continues to investigate the cause.

Damage to building estimated at $150,000

The Peddlar's Village building at the St. Jacob's Farmers' Market will be closed Saturday after a fire broke out in the attic area Thursday afternoon.

Damage to the building isestimated at $150,000, but it is unclear how much the fire will cost the more than 70 vendors that operate out ofthe building.

The Woolwich Fire Department continues to investigate the cause.

"We have a few theories that we have to work through," Woolwich Fire Department fire prevention officerDennisAldous said.

Smoke, water damage

Marcus Shantz, the owner of the Mercedes Corporation, told CBC News the Peddlar's Village will not be open for the Saturday marketdue toexcessive smoke and water damage.

The rest of the market will be open for business as usual.

Woolwich Fire received a call around 1:30 p.m. Thursdayand had the fire extinguished by 5:30 p.m. A combined60 firefighters from Woolwich and the City of Waterloo worked to put out the fire.

The blaze was contained to the Peddlar's Village and did not spread. Woolwich Fire credits that to the building'ssprinkler system.
