Guelph police, politicians prepare for polar plunge fundraiser

More than 130 people have signed up to take a cold dip in an outdoor pool at the University of Guelph Saturday.

People taking part in theGuelphPolicepolar plunge for charity this weekendmay be happy it's been a relatively mildwinter so far this year.

Guelph Police Chief Jeff DeRuyter, former Guelph chief and current Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin, and special guests, including local politicians and administrators at the University of Guelph, will all jumpinto an outdoor pool of cold wateron Saturday to raise money for the Special Olympics.

Environment Canada is forecasting ahigh of 1 C.

A pool was set up on Johnson Green at the University of GuelphFriday afternoon and Const. Mike Gatto said security would be thereovernight "to ensure no one goes for an early dip."

Guelph police said as of Friday133 people had signed up to take part, raising more than $23,900, surpassing the goal of $20,000.

DeRuyter and others taking part have been tweeting in anticipation ofthe event.

The event runsfrom 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., andwill also be broadcast live on Periscope

Guelph is hosting the Special Olympics provincial spring games May 26-28, 2016.
