Canadian teen who died in Hawaii helicopter crash was from Guelph, Ont.

The Canadian teen who died Monday from injuries suffered in a helicopter crash in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, has been identified as being from Guelph, Ont.

The 16-year-old, who has not been named, was a Grade 10 student at Centennial Collegiate, a local mother who has a child at the same school told CBC News in an email. The crash occurred Feb. 18.

The Upper Grand District School Board wouldn't confirm which school the boy attended, but did issue a statement about the teen's death.

"We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of one of our students and our hearts go out to the student's family. Supports are available for our staff and students through the board's crisis response team, guidance counsellors, social workers and child and youth counsellors," the statement said.

Teen trapped underwater

The teen and three family members were aboard the helicopter on a sightseeing tour when it crashed into the water near the Pearl Harbour VisitorCenterin Hawaii.

The teen was trapped underwater and had to be cut free from his seat, witnesses told local media.

Two family members, a 45-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, remain in hospital in stable condition. Another family member was treated and released. Authorities haven't identified any of the family members.

The pilot was also injured in the crash.
