Heavy rainfall warning ends for Waterloo, Wellington regions

A heavy rainfall warning that was issued on Sunday for Waterloo Region has ended according to Environment Canada.

About 20 mm of rain fell at the Region of Waterloo International Airport between midnight Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.

The weather agency normally issues a heavy rainfall warning when 25 mm or more is expected to fall in a 24-hour period. However, the agency sometimes issues a warning when less rain is expected, but the ground is already saturated with water.

"We've had the ice storm of late. So, that means the criteria is fairly soft," said Arnold Ashton, meteorologist with Environment Canada. "That's why the warning was issued for the region."

Warning for Wellington County

Although the warning for Waterloo Region has ended, a similar rainfall warning for Mount Forest, Arthur and northern Wellington County remains in place. As of 8 a.m. Monday, 25 mm of rain had fallen in Mount Forest.

"Generally, north of the K-W area was where the heavier band was," Ashton said. "For instance, Goderich ... has picked up 33 mm, and they're still in the warning as well."

Ashton expected all rainfall warnings in southern Ontario would end late afternoon Monday.
