Students encouraged to wear jerseys Thursday to show support for Humboldt

Students at schools in Waterloo region and Guelph are being encouraged to wear sports jerseys on Thursday to show support for those affected by the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

They will join people from across Canada for Jersey Day, which was organizedby a group of B.C hockey moms.

"In response to this tragic event, flags at schools and facilities across Waterloo Region District School Board have been lowered to half-mast during this time of mourning," the school board said in a release.

Students who do not have jerseys can wear green and gold as well.

Flags have also been lowered across the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Upper Grand District School Board.

Loretta Notten, director of education for the WCDSB, said wearing the jerseys and having the flags at half-mast is "a sign of solidarity with the victims and their families."

People around the region have also been putting hockey sticks by their front doors as part of #PutYourStickOut.
