After nearly two years of construction, King Street is expected to open next month at Victoria Street.

The section has beenclosed since 2015,for the construction of an underpass.

"The actual track work in the area is mostly complete," Avril Fisken, a spokespersonfor GrandLinq told Craig Norris on The Morning Edition. "If you were to walk down there (King and Victoria)...what you would see is the track bed in place, the tracks laid, and the overhead catenary system in place."

Fisken said pedestrians and vehicles will be able to passbetween Moore Avenue and Victoria Street by mid-to-late July.

"Although it looks complete," she said,"there is remainingworkto do."

Fisken said, work will be "substantially complete for the LRT" this summer, but there will be ongoing final asphalt work across theroutethroughout the season.

"It is the beginning of the end," said Fisken. "The road closures that will happen over the next few weeks and the next months arereally to get that final coat of asphalt in place, and that is work that absolutely requires a full road closure, because you're wanting to make sure you have a seamless layer of final asphalt laid out."

Fisken said, overall, residents and businesses along King Street are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel as well.

"I think people have seen the progress and are able to envision what's going to be complete in the next little bit," she said. "I think there's a lot of excitement in the air."

Rain forecast for this week will slow some of the work down as well. Fisken said, plans to begin final paving operations in parts ofuptown Waterloo will be delayed to June 8th.
