Kitchener neighbourhoods approved for affordable housing build

The Region of Waterloo has approved two affordable housing projects to be located on Guelph Streetand Bridgeport Road in Kitchener that will house atotal of 70 to 100 individuals and families.

The Region of Waterloo has approved two affordable housing projects to be located on Guelph Streetand Bridgeport Road in Kitchener that will house atotal of 70 to 100 individuals and families.

The projects are worth almost $5.5 million in federal and provincial funding. The region will provide the builders with grants for development charges worth $886,000.

Jennifer Murdoch-Martin the manager of housing programs and development at the Region of Waterloo says the region is finalizing the details of the build at each location.

"It's going to have a great impact for our community. We'll have 58 units of affordable housing created in our community with this funding."

The region currently has an affordable housing wait list of 4,600 households.

The region said MennoHomes Incorporated will build a multi-use development on 544 Bridgeport Road E. where St. Paul's Lutheran Church is located. It will include 45 one-person affordable rental units. That spotwill also include a flexible worship space, community room, commercial kitchen and office space.

Maxwell Building Consultants will construct a 13-unit apartment on Guelph Street that will include 10 one-bedroom, two three-bedroom and one five bedroom units.

Murdoch-Martin said the region expects to break ground before the end of March 2020 and the units should be move in ready by the end of next year and early 2021.
