Kitchener-Waterloo craft brewers unruffled by buck a beer plans

Buck a beer won't impede craft industry, say K-W craft brewers.

'There really isn't any way I could ever make a beer for a dollar,' says Waterloo craft brewer

Craft brewers inKitchener-Waterlooare calling the new provincialprice floor for beermuch ado about nothing at least where their industry is concerned.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday that he would introduce legislation to lower the minimum price of a bottle or can of beer to $1 from $1.25 ahead of the Labour Day weekend.

Butcraft brewers in the area say they aren't producing on a large enough scale to be impacted by the new legislation anyway.

"The craft consumer and the economical beer consumer are two very different people," said Matthew Lawson, chief marketing officer at Elora Brewing Company.

Local brewers say the new rules will have a bigger impact on large companies like Molson Canadian, who produce beer on a massive scale and so can respond to a price reduction.

Craft beers on the other hand, are produced on a smaller scale and are generally more expensive to make.

"There really isn't any way I could ever make a beer for a dollar," saidSteve Innocente, head brewer atInnocente Brewing Company in Waterloo.

Ford said the government would approve the buck a beer plan by Aug. 27, after the current minimum price was set by the Liberals 10 years ago.
